Did you know that there is a type of travel called ‘Genealogical Tourism’? It involves travelling to find your roots.
I recently undertook a genealogical deep dive whilst writing my mum’s story. Believe me, it was time-consuming, revealing and frequently very distracting – going down rabbit warrens with limited returns on the information I was seeking.
But it made me think about how far some of our ancestors travelled, often to escape conflict and start anew.
Modern Australia was colonised by either those who were exiled for ‘the term of their natural life’ or immigrants who were encouraged to come to the ‘lucky country’ to start afresh.
