As most of you would have probably realised by now…I'm a bit of a word/saying collector. So, I thought I would share what my trusty old-fashioned hard cover book ‘The Origins of words and phrases’ states about our favourite topic - TRAVEL, as you continue to enjoy my journey.
TRAVEL - Keen globetrotters might reflect on how privileged they are to have aircraft, credit cards, internet access and all other conveniences of modern travel, but others will regard it as torture. Well ‘torture ‘ is at the root of the word travel, which came from travail, a literary word for ‘painful or laborious effort’. The two forms were once interchangeable, and originated in an instrument of torture, called ‘trepalium’ in Latin, that consisted of three stakes.
Robert Louis Stevenson, himself a keen traveller, was the first to express the view that it is better to travel hopefully than to arrive, in 1881. The idea that travel broadens the mind is also relatively recent, appearing first in 1900.
So there you have it. As you travel to get your Christmas shopping done, or travel to family gatherings or travel for some alone time…you decide on you meaning of travel.
I'd love to hear you feedback…so feel free to write some comments.
Totally agree, that is what my trip is all about...meeting locals, tasting local food, taking risks and being in the moment
I love this and have been thinking on the term travel and refreshing what it means. I think we’ve lost our way if we think travel means getting on an airplane or staying in a hotel - it’s really so much more
